I have just set up a Grandstream HT-*!@ @FXS with Sipgate.

I am in the UK and used these settings

https://teamhelp.sipgate.co.uk/hc/en-gb/articles/208200875-UK-Regional-Settings-Cisco-Linksys-Sipura-Adaptors-

All is working well BUT when someone rings me they say they can hear
their voice echoing and my voice is quite loud.

Thanks

The responsibility for cancelling that echo lies with the your phone, or
ATA.

In practice, the responsibility for audio levels also lies with the
phone. The only other place would be the D/A conversion at the caller's
end (typically exchange line card, PABX, or their phone, if digital).

I remember endless fun trying to match impedance of a Sipura to my line,
supposed to be

370ohms in series with (620ohms in parallel with 310nF)

presume the Grandstream has options?

Try changing the state of Stun on to off, or off to on. That is the
easiest thing to try even though it may not work.
What ports are you using? If 5060 try the newer Sipgate numbers:-
RTP min 43104 max 43120
SIP 43160
Also make sure your FXS impedance is set correctly, it should be
370+620||310nF

These are part of my settings on Sipgate (using Linksys PAP2T) and I
don't have and never have had any echo issues.

this is PAP2 but should be same on PAP2T

have a look at admin , advanced view , regional

down bottom miscellaneus look for fxs impedance

I had the same reports that people I called received echo. I tried
everything (including different clients, headsets etc) and concluded in
the end it was somewhere in the interface between Sipgate and the POTS
network. I have no such trouble with Voipfone.

The interface will be full duplex digital, so should not create echoes.
The difference could either be that the other provider provides extra
echo cancellation to compensate for poor quality phones, or that SIPGate
tries to do that, but ends up cancelling echoes that didn't exist.

Doing echo cancellation in the middle of the network is difficult
because when you are training echo cancellers, you can be receiving
non-echo sounds as well, and also because the echo characteristics can
change after the original training, and one cannot respond quickly to
those otherwise the local use speaking could upset the echo cancellation
calculations.

The other possible way that they could differ is that the one without
the echo may be using voice operated switching to mute one side's audio,
but this can make it difficult for the other side to interrupt, and may
chop off first syllables.
